Born in Texas in 1977, Rula Jones spent her early years between London, Northern England, and the United States before settling in the Washington, D.C. region. She later relocated to New York City for college, where she lived and worked for nearly a decade, before returning to the D.C. area. She is currently based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Jones is a visual artist, educator, curator, and publisher with over 15 years of experience across K–12 education, museum programming, and contemporary art spaces. She has taught at institutions including The Corcoran College of Art + Design, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, and McLean Project for the Arts, developing curriculum that integrates studio practice with art history and critical inquiry. She is the founder of Gallery 115 and the AIR Studio Program at the Y Art Center in Frederick, Maryland, and previously served as Gallery Director at BlackRock Center for the Arts, where she curated exhibitions and developed interdisciplinary programming.
She is also the founder and director of Prism Press, an independent publishing platform dedicated to contemporary art and global dialogue. Through Prism Press, she produces exhibition catalogues, organizes virtual exhibitions, and supports international artists through curated projects and initiatives.
Her studio practice begins with drawing, which remains the foundation of her work. Working in graphite, watercolor, and paint, she constructs psychologically driven compositions where memory, intuition, and inner narrative intersect. Figures, animals, and symbolic forms function as carriers of emotional states, exploring the relationship between internal experience and the external world. In addition, she writes and illustrates books for children, bringing her visual language into narrative form through published works.
Growing up across multiple cultural environments fostered both adaptability and a strong internal point of reference, which continues to inform her work. Her practice reflects an ongoing exploration of perception, resilience, and the complexity of human experience.
